Music Extravaganza for Christian Aid at St Mark’s | 21st June

On Friday, June 21st we are holding a Music Extravaganza at St Mark’s in Upper Hale —an evening of music, dance and singing, all in support of Christian Aid, a charity which works with some of the most marginalized communities across the world.

Doors open at 6.30pm and the concert starts at 7pm.

Among the performers are:
John Bush

A multi-talented musician who performs both contemporary and classical music along with fellow musicians. A fun performance can be expected, with lots of audience participation.

Church Choir

The resident choir of St George’s, St Mark’s and St John’s combines to sing a mixture of popular hymns and songs.

In Accord

A Guildford-based ladies a cappella group performing a mixture of songs from sea shanties to Beatles and more.

Kerala Girls

A group of young ladies with traditional dress performing dances from the Kerala area of India. They rehearse at St George’s Church on Fridays.

Olivia Jasper

A young soloist who was brought up in Farnham and is a member of the church. She is returning to support the concert with some beautiful solo singing.

Paris School of Dance
Tap dancers from a well established dance school which rehearses at St George’s every Thursday.

Tickets (£10) are available on the door or from Sue Lampard on 07596953138. Under 12s free. There will be drinks and nibbles available and a raffle on the evening.

Our summer holidays parish magazine is here, covering the months of July and August.

With summer here there is plenty going on both inside and out, and among the events featured in this issue are a free Barn Dance at St Mark’s on the evening of July 14th to celebrate the 140th birthday of the church (see page 26) and a performance of Doorstep Duets by Matthew Bourne’s New Adventures in support of a coffee morning for the parish on July 15th (see page 14).

There is also news of a talk on July 21st about how to support people with autism (page 36), family events run by Farnham Maltings at the churches (page 14), events at the Hale Family Centre (page 24), the return of Messy Church on July 9th and Pride services on August 20th (both on page 23).

Concert for Christian Aid

It’s Christian Aid Week next week and we are holding a concert to raise money for this vital charity on Friday, May 26th at 7.30pm at St George’s.

There will be music from soloists and groups, including Saxooma saxophone quartet, choirs, a singalong, dancing, a raffle, drinks and nibbles. Tickets are £5 (children free) on the door.

This year, Christian Aid Week is focusing on Malawi where food, fuel, fertiliser and school fees have doubled in price in the last 12 months, and hard-working farmers are seeing their harvests fail as the climate crisis brings increasingly erratic weather. The impact of the recent Cyclone Freddy in Malawi has been devastating. Floods have washed away crops, over 500,000 people have been displaced and hundreds have lost their lives.

Music evening for Christian Aid

Come to a musical evening on Saturday, May 7, at 6.30pm at St George’s Church, Badshot Lea, all in aid of Christian Aid.

There will be singing by In Accord and the Church Choir as well as soloists and a chance to have a singalong. There will also be saxophone music, piano, the organ, and much more.

Drinks and nibbles will be provided and all this for just £5, payable on the door. Children have free entry.

So join us at St George’s on May 7 at 6.30pm and help raise money for Christian Aid.

Christian Aid games afternoon cancelled

Unfortunately the Christian Aid games afternoon at St Mark’s, Hale, tomorrow (Thursday) has had to be cancelled. Our apologies.
However, there is still loads you can do to help Christian Aid which this year is focusing on providing maternity healthcare in Sierra Leone, the world’s most dangerous place to become a mother – every day 10 women die from giving birth. Christian Aid is helping support maternity healthcare in the country to reduce the numbers of women dying in childbirth.

Prudence the Piggy went to HSBC

rudence the pig visited HSBC Bank in Farnham last Thursday to ask the bank to stop investing in fossil fuels and instead put its money into renewable energy.

Prudence bore the signatures of members of the churches of St George’s, St John’s and St Mark’s in the parish of Badshot Lea and Hale, and was presented to the bank by the Reverends Lesley and Alan Crawley, joint rectors in the parish, along with parishioners Helena and David Walker and Sorrell Price.

Lesley Crawley explained that the pig was a petition and was part of the Big Shift campaign by the charity Christian Aid to ask the banks to change where they invested their customers’ money and to put this money into renewable energy for the sake of the planet.

She told a representative of HSBC: “We want the bank to divest from fossil fuels and invest in something either neutral or good to help counter climate change.”

HSBC agreed to accept the petition and to send it to head office, where it will join others from around the UK.

Rev’d Crawley added: “Laura Mead, the regional co-ordinator at Christian Aid, contacted all the banks in Farnham to ask them to accept the Big Shift petition, but HSBC was the only one who would receive us.”
