St John’s through the years

An update from the Farnham Church Recorders:

We are now well under way with our work at St John’s. We record everything inside the church, but we also look at changes that have been made to the building to help us with dating items like windows and stonework. Our visits to the archives have revealed some interesting information about the changes made to St John’s since the church was built in 1844.

The first proposed alterations were featured in a previous blog post, and plans from 1844 and 1861 were then recorded in a later post.

However, according to a document at the Surrey History Centre, dated 1st July 1868, other improvements were made including the construction of a porch (whether south or west isn’t clear) which is not shown on the 1861 plan:

Then in 1895 a ‘Jubilee Memorial’ was proposed, and a draft version of an appeal leaflet found at London Metropolitan Archives during a research visit by one of our team explains why the changes were so badly needed!

The people elected to raise the funds for these improvements include names well known to those who are interested in the story of the church.

In the same bundle of documents is a plan dated 1896 showing what was eventually built.

It’s well known that Bishop Sumner and his wife Jennie were buried in St John’s churchyard, and we had heard various opinions about the exact position of their graves. The plan shows that they now lie under the vestry. The graves were originally outside the church, and the 1896 extension was built over them. The original gravestones are still in the churchyard but were moved to the east side of the church, and the beautiful memorial plaque to Bishop and Mrs Sumner in the chancel indicates that their graves are nearby. The plaque was designed by the Sumners’ grandson, Heywood Sumner, who was a noted artist in the Arts and Crafts movement.

We’re now looking into the next significant alteration and will reveal our findings in due course…

Holy Week and Easter

Easter is being celebrated in the Parish of Badshot Lea and Hale in north Farnham by a series of services, reflections, a craft market, and an open-air Easter Experience and not just one but four Easter Egg hunts.

On Monday to Wednesday this week there will be meditations at St John’s, Hale, at 7.30pm.

On Maundy Thursday, April 14, there will be Holy Communion, the Stripping of the Altar, and a vigil at both St George’s Church, Badshot Lea, and St John’s Church, Hale, at 7.30pm, with foot-washing at St John’s as well.

On Good Friday, April 15, there will be a Good Friday liturgy at St John’s, at 9.30am, and a service at St Mark’s, at 11am. At 2pm at St George’s, there will be Good Friday devotions.

On Easter Sunday, April 17, we will celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ at St John’s, at 9.30am; then at St George’s at 10am; and at St Mark’s, Upper Hale, at 11am, and each service will be followed by an Easter Egg hunt.

On Easter Saturday, April 16, there will be an Easter Craft Market with an Easter Egg hunt for children, at St Mark’s Church, Upper Hale, from 10am-2pm. There will be lots of stalls selling everything from knitwear to truffles, jewellery to soaps, and a trail to find Easter eggs.

And don’t forget the Easter Experience in the churchyard at St John’s, Hale, a series of interactive stations which trace the story of the last week of Jesus’ life all the way to his death on Good Friday and his resurrection on Easter Sunday. The Easter Experience is available at all hours of day and night until April 18.

An Easter Experience

Follow the story of Holy Week and Easter in our outdoor Easter Experience in St John’s Churchyard, from April 4-18. You will follow stations which will take you from Gethsemane to the Garden Tomb, via the Courtyard and Golgotha, and discover the story behind the betrayal, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

The Easter Experience will be open at all times and there will be signs explaining what to do.

Mothering Sunday

Next Sunday, March 27, is Mothering Sunday and everyone is welcome at any of our services – St John’s, 9.30am; St George’s, 10am; St Mark’s, 11am.

We will be celebrating our mothers and/or others who take or have taken care of us over the years. There will be refreshments and posies for all. Contact us if you would like more details.

If you find Mothering Sunday difficult, there is a peaceful reflection called Loving Kindness at St Mark’s at 9.30am. Further details here.

Dust and ashes

This Wednesday (February 22) is Ash Wednesday, the first day of Lent, the beginning of the season which leads up to Good Friday and Easter Sunday.

Ash Wednesday has its roots in the ancient Jewish tradition of penance and fasting and many Christians mark the day by going to church and having a mark of ashes placed on their foreheads. Here in the parish there will be a service of ashing at St Mark’s at noon, and at St John’s at 7.30pm.

The ash is made by burning palm crosses, like the ones we use at the Palm Sunday services each year, and you can receive the mark with the words:

“Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return.
Turn away from sin and be faithful to Christ.”

It is a solemn reminder of our calling to follow Christ and be his body here on earth.

Love Your Church Sunday

Next Sunday, February 13, is Love Your Church Sunday.

It’s a day to celebrate all the great things about our churches and the people who make church what it is.

Please come along and hear from lots of people about the things that they do at church and why they love their church. The times of the services are:

9:30am St John’s, Hale.
10:00am St George’s, Badshot Lea.
11:00am St Mark’s, Upper Hale.

And here on the website and on Facebook.
