New Craft Market is a resounding success

Farnham’s newest craft market, which opened in St Mark’s Church, Hale, on Saturday, July 17, has been declared a resounding success.

The market was opened at 10am on Saturday by Cllr Alan Earwaker, Mayor of Farnham, and a steady stream of visitors browsed the stalls for jewellery, textiles, glass, handmade soaps, hats, home décor, cards, pictures and much more, as well as sitting down for tea and home-made cake and listening to live music played on the fiddle, saxophone and double bass. People also took the opportunity to get a closer look at the newly restored murals in the chancel which were painted a century ago by a local artist, Kitty Milroy, and are now recognised as being of national importance.

Everyone – visitors, stallholders and the amazing team who put this on – had a good time and emails and social media messages have been coming in saying how much people enjoyed it. A lot of the stallholders have asked to book again and in August we will be able to have more stalls in the church. This month we limited the number because of Covid restrictions but we will be able to expand though we intend to remain cautious in the light of the rising number of Covid cases.

This was the first of a series of regular monthly markets which will take placed on the third Saturday of each month and the next one will be on Saturday, August 21, from 10am-2pm.

Come to the Community Fete

We  are very excited to be able to host the Badshot Lea Community Fete on 3rd July at St. George’s from 12-4pm.

We will be having a barbecue and refreshments, including cream teas.   Due to the restrictions still in place, everyone eating or drinking will need to be seated – so it is lucky we have lots of lawn.  It should be a lovely atmosphere on the beautiful summer grass. 

Sadly, the restrictions mean that the children of Badshot Lea Village School are unable to perform for us but hopefully this will not stop them coming along and enjoying everything on offer.  We are delighted to have partnered with the Tice’s Meadow Birders group, who will have an exhibition,  Badshot Bloomers, with their exciting news about a new Community Garden and the Community Association.  The Sea Cadets will be present and letting people know what goes on in their organisation and the Working Men’s Club will also be represented.  Nibbs Gin are producing flyers which will include interesting discounts.

As a new incentive this year, we have invited small businesses to hire a spot in the car park to sell their wares – so there will artists, wax melts, Usborne Books, bath bombs, hand and face creams, children’s bits and bobs, fudge, calligraphy, craft items, our very own ‘Home Produce’ and a good-as-new toy stall.  We also have a children’s ‘Tea Cup’ ride.

Don’t forget our Summer Grand Draw with a first prize of £100; tickets are already on sale. We are also running a bottle tombola and a more general tombola.  (Any donations gratefully received).

We are all looking forward to a great afternoon of eating, having fun in the sun and coming together as a community.

Our May magazine is out now, a bumper edition this month with information about the elections for Surrey County Council members and the Surrey Police and Crime Commissioner. Please read their statements and please vote; if we don’t bother to have a say we can hardly complain about the people who are elected.

There is information too about events going on this month including our Farnham Flower Festival (online again, of course) which is being sponsored by our favourite florist Florescence, and plans for the fete in July. Please get involved in both. There is news about new rooms to hire, an article on grief, information about taking part in Christian Aid Week and much more, plus, of course, lots of great adverts with services, offers and classes.

Badshot Lea and Hale Community Fete
July 3rd, 2021


Restrictions permitting, St. George’s Church will be hosting this year’s Badshot Lea and Hale Community Fete.

We’d love to make this a real community event, so if your group is based in the Parish or the surrounding area and you would like to come along just to publicise or to run a stall for your organisation, or have any brilliant ideas, please contact Maxine Everitt – Maxine.everitt@badshotleaandhale.org


We’d also like to offer small businesses a chance to hire a space at just £15 – we appreciate this has been a hard time for you and we expect a good footfall, so why not give it a go? Again, drop Maxine an email.

RESCHEDULED – THE GREAT BOARD GAME QUIZ!

The Great Board Game Quiz will be on Zoom on Saturday, May 1, a change from its original April date. It’s a brilliant way to have fun and raise money for parish funds. 

There will be quiz rounds inspired by board games and it will be suitable for all the family.

Quiz Night!

We are holding another Quiz Night for the parish – this Saturday evening (May 30) at 7.30pm, on Zoom.

Last time we had around 16 teams who tackled an admittedly tricky quiz (strong words were had with the quiz master afterwards!) and we are aiming for even more this time and perhaps slightly more user-friendly questions. In fact the quiz master has resigned on the grounds that he wants a chance to answer questions too and the quiz will be devised and compered by Ed Eggleton.

We’ve also learned a lot about Zoom in the past few weeks so that should all be smoother too!

Last time we raised around £100 for the parish through donations and there will be the chance to donate again. Let’s beat that number too!

Special atmosphere and Santa at SHIP party

Families from Sandy Hill met Santa Claus and showed off their dance moves at a party at St Mark’s on the Monday before Christmas (December 23).

The families, from the Sandy Hill Inclusive Partnership (SHIP), enjoyed a party which included table tennis, pool, art and craft, music and dance provided by the performing arts school Boogie Pumps, and, of course, a visit from Santa Claus who brought gifts for all the children and their parents too.

“It was a really special atmosphere,” said Francis from Boogie Pumps, who led the children in a dance session involving hoops, pom poms, baby sharks and a lot of energy and enthusiasm, while the general consensus among the families was that it was “awesome” and “we’ve been spoiled!”.

More than 100 presents were provided for the children following the annual Farnborough Business Park Christmas Gift Drive, collecting brand new toys, clothes, vouchers, make-up and jewellery for some young people. Members of St Mark’s, St John’s and St George’s churches had also donated enough presents for the SHIP adults to take home a bag of gifts each too.

A big thank-you to everyone who gave so generously, and to everyone who helped put on the party, including Waitrose who provided some of the food. It was great fun and a lovely start to Christmas. We are looking forward to other events with SHIP in the new year.

Lights, craft, action – Christmas kicks off in Badshot Lea

The Christmas lights are being  switched on in Badshot Lea on the evening of Monday November 18th, in preparation for celebrating the coming of God to earth in the form of Jesus, born some 2000 years ago but ever relevant and transformative.

Come and join us at St George’s Church, Badshot Lea, from 4.30-7pm. Not only are the lights going on, there will be a craft fair in the church and, outside from 5-6.30pm, community singing and entertainment by the Sea Cadets and the children of Badshot Lea Infant School.

There are still some craft tables left. If anyone would like one, let us know by email. And come along and do some Christmas shopping, have a sing and get into the Christmas spirit.
