Generosity – Bonus Material and a service

Sharing skills to be stronger together

Through Jesus, therefore, let us continually offer to God a sacrifice of praise – the fruit of lips that openly profess his name. And do not forget to do good and to share with others, for with such sacrifices God is pleased.

Generosity through community.

Being in a community is important to us as human beings. We are a social species. We collaborate. We are comfortable in the sharing of our space with others. There are times, often when we are young and at school, where we are surrounded by hundreds of people who we may describe as our close community. At other times, it may just be one other, but having that space where we feel ‘at home’ with someone else is essential for our continued health.

Our church can be this also. A place where we share with one another, often outside of the normal social boundaries, in such a way that builds each other closer together and closer to God.

Developing these communities is important not only for our wellbeing, but also for helping us share God’s love with greater impact. Communities of generous believers can practically achieve more through having more hands at work. However, just the very act of a group of people from different backgrounds and ages, is a statement of generosity that shows the world the character of a generous God.

Sometimes it’s tricky, but these communities of believers sharing life together is our calling.

Generosity – Day 8

Helping yourself can help others

Jesus put before them another parable: “The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed that someone took and sowed in his field; it is the smallest of all the seeds, but when it has grown it is the greatest of shrubs and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the air come and make nests in its branches.

– Matthew 13:31-32


Think about a time you received something from someone else. What opportunities were there for you to use the gift your received to help another? Is it enough to just say ‘thank you’ when we receive something, or does one good turn deserve another? What do many small acts add up to? Could we ourselves turn a mustard seed into a tree?

In our reading, Jesus tells us that small beginnings can have wide reach.  If we can act generously as a response to the generosity we have received, we can be the seed from which wide branches of generosity can spread out.

When we are low, it can feel hard to feel like we have anything to offer others, when in fact, even simple acts like listening and talking can be small offerings of generosity that lift others around us. 

God assures us that we can rely on him to lift us up when we are down. God is love, and his love is always with us. With his strength we can give forward of the many gifts we are blessed with. Just as Jesus commanded his disciples to love one another as he loved them, so our small acts of generosity can spread God’s love to others and throughout the wider world.

Finding the individual in the crisis

I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you took care of me, I was in prison and you visited me.

In our reading Jesus affirms that help and kindness offered to another person is help and kindness offered to him.

What do you see? What is your perspective of the needy? Do you see a child of God in need of help and support? Because how you see people determines how you relate to them. Our calling as Christians is not just for ourselves but to share God’s love and generosity with all and this is the culture in the Diocese of Chichester, supporting people in different situations because the only question that really matters is do we love Jesus and do we wish to see his will done on earth? Jesus said. “Just as you loved one of the least of these, who are members of my family, you loved me.”

Generosity – Day 6

A generous youth for a generous world tomorrow

Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap; for the measure you give will be the measure you get back.

Today’s podcast shows how we can unlock generosity when we share what we believe God is calling us to do, or, as Archbishop Rowan Williams put it, when we “find out what God is doing and join in”. People are inspired to be generous when they feel that being generous matters, that without their generosity God’s work will not be fulfilled. We can sometimes be almost apologetic for asking for people’s generosity, yet generosity is transformative and integral to our faith and to living it out. 

The podcast shows how young people in the parish benefited from people’s generosity, but of course the church benefited too, generosity is not a one-way street. The generosity brought the energy, hope, idealism, passion and action of young people into the church and we could all do with more of that. One of the joys of generosity is that it inspires generosity in return, and that it sets off a virtuous cycle. It is God’s economy in action, where acts of kindness inspire others and the call to love God and our neighbour transforms our neighbourhoods. Give, and it will be given to you…

Generosity – Day 5

Generosity that grows

Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.

Generosity has momentum.

It’s easy to feel like the troubles of the world are too much for us to have an impact. Whether it be a global pandemic, institutional racism, environmental disasters, or any number of other major issues that cause pain and hurt across the world… is there anything we can do to actually make a difference? 

This is where a generous spirit comes into play. An act of generosity today becomes a wave of generosity tomorrow. We have been created in the image of God, a God who is generous beyond measure. When we lean into that part of our character, when we purposefully look for opportunities to share that generosity within our communities, you can be sure that the impact will be felt far beyond the first act.

We might not see the culmination of that generous act, but we can be confident that as we are generous to others so that generosity spreads and multiplies. People will see and experience it and be encouraged to be generous in their own way, with whatever they have to share with the world around them.

Generosity – Day 4

A helping hand, not a handout

Like good stewards of the manifold grace of God, serve one another with whatever gift each of you has received. 

– 1 Peter 4.10


Peter wrote here to encourage and instruct the dispersed and persecuted Christians of Asia Minor. As with any oppressed community some were richer, some poorer, but all suffered under their situation’s weight. However, in the midst of discussing their suffering, Peter exhorts that they should be good companions to one another, giving of whatever that they have received. 

Under the pandemic we have all suffered. Our liberties were reduced in order to protect and care for each other. For some this has meant financial hardship, increased mental health worries, isolation and loneliness. Yet despite this suffering we see our churches serving, and Peter tells us to serve with the strength that God supplies. 

But Peter goes further, for we are not just serving to be liked or from duty, but we are serving “so that God may be glorified in all things through Jesus Christ” (v.11). Through our generosity and service we praise God. Our hands become God’s hands and in their action we pray without ceasing. Through the simplest act of helping another, of giving from the wealth we have received, we are giving that gift to the body of Christ and praising him.

Generosity – Day 3

Taking generosity beyond the church walls

Which of these three do you think was a neighbour to the man who fell into the hands of robbers?” The expert in the law replied, “The one who had mercy on him.” Jesus told him, “Go and do likewise

– Luke 10:36-37


This reading is the ending to one of the most famous parables in the Bible, the Good Samaritan. A man sets off down a dangerous road, is attacked by robbers and left for dead. Two members of the man’s own religious group, a priest and a Levite, pass by, but fearing for their own safety they do not assist. Then a Samaritan passes by and shows incredible generosity by risking his life to stop, tend the wounds of the injured man, and take him to safety. 

The Samaritans and Jews despised each other with each group committing atrocities against the other over hundreds of years before the time of Jesus. The fact that Jesus chooses in this parable to have a Samaritan rescue a Jew teaches us that generosity is not just for those groups of people that we like or feel comfortable around, like our own church congregations. There is in fact no limit to the generosity we should show; this includes showing generosity to those that are not like us, or who we do not like or who do not like us. We live the commandment to ‘go and do likewise’ when we take generosity beyond our church walls.

Generosity – Day 1

A good person produces good from the good treasure of his heart…because the mouth speaks from the overflow of the heart.

On the Day of Pentecost, one minute Jesus’s followers were inside four walls waiting for the unknown – uncertain and timorous; the next they were tumbling into the street, praise to God pouring out of them as the Holy Spirit had been poured into them. Onlookers, unbelievers and the religious alike were stopped in their tracks. The church was born and was on the move! From their ‘holy huddle’ to impacting a city, a nation and the world. 

When God fills our lives, we just can’t contain it. His goodness and love are so abundant that we are literally flooded out! And that leaking of love is designed to touch the lives of the world around us, in turn arresting others with God’s amazing love. Here in Cornwall, the beauty of our landscape often speaks for itself and holds our gaze but we also want our words and subsequently our actions to be a reflection of the grace and beauty of our Lord Jesus, drawing attention to Him. Has God filled your heart with good treasure? Then God expects it to overflow to others through your words, impressing them not with your own wisdom but with His power.

Cook for messy church

Role description: Working out a menu, purchasing food, preparing the food for cooking including salad preparation and or vegetables, cooking and co-ordinating the serving of the meal.

Person description: Able to prepare and cook meals. Prepare of salad. Coordinate with your second cook and servers. Have a food safety certificate-online.

Hours:  4 hours monthly will be 3rd Thursday at St. Mark’s (not December or August)

Reports to: Michelle

Second cook

Role description: Assisting with the menu, assisting with purchasing food, preparing the food for cooking including salad preparation and or vegetables, cooking and assisting with the serving.

Person description: Able to assist the cook for messy church preparing and cooking meals. Preparation of salad. Assisting with the serving of the meals.

Hours: 3 hours monthly will be 3rd Thursday at St. Mark’s (not December or August)

Messy church activity leader x 6

Role description: To assist at an activity table

Person description:  Able to engage and assist the families whilst they engage in an activity based on the theme of the messy church session. To use your creative skills to prepare and run an activity on the theme of the session-but not essential.

Hours: 3 hours monthly will be 3rd Thursday at St. Mark’s (not December or August)

1 hour for sourcing and researching an activity-not essential.

Assistant for school experiences ( year group come to the church)

Role description: Assisting with scripting the experiences when schools wish to do them. Sourcing the items for the displays, setting the displays up on the day and engaging with the children during the day for their experience.

Person description: Able to engage with the children, computer skills.

Hours: Ad hoc and during school time for the experiences, time for sourcing materials for the displays.

Open the Book Member

Role description: Open the Book is part of the Bible Society and is groups of people from local churches visiting local schools and reading Bible stories – but it is so much more than that! We have had a team in this parish for the past seven years and we would like more people to join our team. There is a rolling programme of stories with comments and prayers all approved by the schools and Ofsted. This is a wonderful experience – for us as a team and the children we meet. They look forward to our visits, often take part in the stories and always enter into the spirit of the story. It is an honour to introduce the next generation to the wonderful stories of God and his love for us.

Person description: Enjoy being with children and telling them stories, and have about two hours during the school day, alternate weeks in term time.

Hours: We practise and prepare on alternate Monday mornings at 9:15.

Visit Folly Hill school on alternate Tuesday mornings 10:15 – 10:45.

Visit Badshot Lea school and Tootsies nursery on alternate Wednesday mornings 10:15 – 11:15.

School Mentors

Role description: We have recently taken on the running of a mentoring scheme for young people in Heath End School.  We listen and talk to a young person for an hour a week during term time and there is a termly meeting of mentors.  Commitment is for a term at a time, initial training involves safeguarding and training of mentoring – three courses of 4 hours.

Person description: A non-judgmental attitude and love for teenagers

Hours: 3 hours per week term time

Parish Roles

PCC Secretary

Role description:

To circulate the agenda and relevant information before each meeting of the PCC in consultation with the incumbents. To take minutes and circulate them to members after the meetings

To liaise with members by email in between meetings such as taking votes on items which cannot wait. Keep a record of the results and post them on Office 365.

To prepare the Annual Report in consultation with the incumbent

To organise and minute the Annual Meetings

To handle correspondence on behalf of the Parish

To correspond with the Diocese informing them of names and contact details of officers in the Parish

To update the Charities Commission website with details of Officers and members of the PCC

To upload the Annual Report and Finance Report to the Charities Commission website in consultation with the incumbents

Person description: Good organisational skills, ability to precis and pick out the essentials at meetings, patience, basic knowledge of Word/Excel

Hours: 1-2 hours per week

System Support

Role description: The parish currently runs on a variety of Google sheets, with associated Javascript macros. There is an opportunity to support these, or to help move them to Office 365 Power Automate

Person description: Good Computer skills with some experience of programming

Number of hours: Work expands to fill the time available!  If it is ongoing support there is perhaps an hour a week, but this can come in lumps as Google have a habit of changing things without telling us and they then need to be made to work in the new regime.

Role description: Understand the requirements of Data Protection and ensure we are compliant

Person description: Good at understanding regulations and applying them

Social Media Lead

Role description: Running our Instagram account and Twitter account

Role description: Sharing, liking and commenting on our social media posts

Questioning Faith Mentors

Role description: When we run QF courses for people new to Christianity it would be good to have more established people from the congregation to support the new people.

Person description: Willingness to talk openly about their own faith

Number of hours: Courses tend to be about 6-8 weeks of 1½ hours, run on an ad hoc basis

Magazine editor

Role description: Putting together the parish magazine each month, asking for contributions, laying out the pages.

Person description: Computer literate with an eye for laying out the magazine and an understanding of what the readers will want in their magazine

Magazine delivery coordination

Role description: Coordinating a team of people to deliver the magazines. Posting some of the magazines to those who live outside the parish

Person description: Good at organisation and spreadsheets, good at leading a team

Notice Board Officer

Role description: Collect items to put on the boards and pin them up once a week

Person description: Able to collect the posters etc and get round the three churches, a good eye to ensure the boards look attractive

Role description: Calling people to check they are ok, visiting when that is allowed

Person description: Empathetic, non-judgemental, good at listening, loves people

Vergers for Occasional Offices

Role description: Available occasionally during the day and on Saturdays to help at Funerals and Weddings – able to work the CD player and put out the microphones and welcome people

Person description: Good with technology and welcoming

Church roles

Singers to sing in the Parish Choir

Role description: Attending choir practice and singing in the choir at St John’s and St George’s

Person description: A love of singing, and the ability to sing in tune.  It is not necessary to be able to read music.

Hours: Choir practice is at St George’s Church, Badshot Lea, every Monday during term time, from 6pm ’till 7 or 7.15pm. Services last one hour every Sunday morning at each of the churches.


Role Description: Musician to play occasionally at services at either St. George’s or St. John’s

Person description: A competent and confident keyboard player, preferably, but could be a guitar player, accordion player, or fiddle player! With imagination and enthusiasm for playing, and leading the choir and congregation in the singing.

Hours: – playing for a service one Sunday morning a month, practise in the hymns on the rota to be played.  Prepare suitable music to play at the beginning and end of each service, and during the service, as required.

Cleaning at each of the churches

Role description: Clean the church and other rooms

Person description: Good at cleaning

Hours: 1.5 hours per week per church and 2 hours per week at St George’s

Reports to: Warden

On Call Key Holders for St John’s and for St George’s

Role description: Holds keys to the church and is able to open up the church at short notice

Person description: Able to be contacted at short notice during the day or evening

Hours: very infrequent occurrence

Reports to: Warden 

Eco-Church representative at each of the churches

Role description: Four churches are Eco-churches, a national initiative that uses an online questionnaire to assess churches. This person needs to fill in the online data, recommend policies to the PCC and promote eco work in congregation

Person description: Knowledgeable and passionate about environmental issues and computer literate

Hours: Depends on agreement

St John’s Church


Role description: Prepare prayers for the Sunday Service and pray them during the service

Person description: Able to lead prayers

Opening and closing the church

Role description: Opens and closes the church on a rota

Coffee lead

Role description: Make sure there are people to serve coffee each week and that we have the right supplies

Person description: Friendly and welcoming and able to fill in an online spreadsheet

Grounds officer at St John’s

Role description: Able to organise teams to help occasionally. At each of the churches we do have great people who are already doing gardening, but there are sometimes additional maintenance works that needs a team

St George’s Church

St Georges Risk Assessment Co-ordinator

Role description: The parish have a small group who create Generic Risk Assessments and assist in the creation of non Generic Risk Assessments.  The aim is to have one from each Church so that local knowledge is represented on the group. 

Person description: Prior experience of creating Risk Assessments would be ideal.

Hours: The time is difficult to specify as it will depend on the need for new Risk Assessments.  However, there is an initial period of catch up reviewing the risks that we currently have and rationalising them into Generic Risk Assessments which can be used by multiple Activities.  During this initial stage about 6 hours/month should be required.

Role description: Put out chairs and welcome people as they arrive.

Person description: Fit and able to move chairs, friendly and welcoming

Hours: 2 per month

Role description: Mow the lawn at St George’s from the spring

Person description: Able to use the electric mower

Role description: Prepare everything for communion and assist the priest during the service

St Mark’s Church

Maintenance officer at St Mark’s

Role description: Repair things that can be repaired and call in contractors when necessary. Check fabric monthly.

Person description: Good at DIY. Ideally it would be good to have electrician, construction or plumbing experience

Gardener at St Mark’s

Role description:

We need a person prepared to tend the hedges either side of the main driveway down the side of St Marks. The object is to ensure they remain neat and to prevent significant incursion onto the driveway itself. We have people for grass mowing and major hedge trimming at the moment, so this should not be necessary.


It is estimated this may take up to 2 hours per month.
