Support the Kitty Murals!

Following Kitty Milroy’s exposure in the national news, people have been asking us how we can carry on supporting the murals and give Kitty the recognition she deserves.

We need to ensure that they are protected and preserved for generations to come and also spread the news about her and her extraordinary talent. So, we are fundraising for the ongoing conservation and to pay for the roof which has had to be mended to keep the murals safe from the elements.

Plant Sale

Can you spare some plants? Do you want some plants for your garden? Then our plant sale is for you!

Instead of a plant stall at the fete on July 3, we are holding a plant on Saturday, May 29, in the grounds of St George’s Church.

This is to raise funds for the whole parish so please support us.

Divide your perennials or dig up the plant which is in the wrong place and bring your offerings along just before 10am please. The sale will last from 10am to midday.

If you have no plants to offer and don’t wish to buy any please make a donation to parish funds instead.

On the day lack of cash is not a problem – bring along your credit card as we have card readers to take your money!

RESCHEDULED – THE GREAT BOARD GAME QUIZ!

The Great Board Game Quiz will be on Zoom on Saturday, May 1, a change from its original April date. It’s a brilliant way to have fun and raise money for parish funds. 

There will be quiz rounds inspired by board games and it will be suitable for all the family.

Our April magazine is out now, full of Easter hope, news, plans and offers by our wonderful, loyal advertisers.

Inside, along with the joy of Easter, you will find information on our plans for growth and how we want to serve our community better, you’ll find encouraging news about vaccinations, courses about faith, a ‘cycle ride’ from John O’Groats to Land’s End to raise money for the church and for research into dementia, a piece about Pamela who has led the choir at St John’s for the past decade, and much more. Cycling virtually end to end for the Church and Dementia research

Farnham man Paul Eggleton (pictured below) has started his ‘cycle ride’ from John O’Groats to Land’s End to raise money for both the parish and Alzheimer’s Society, but without leaving his house.

On April 1 he started the ‘journey’ on his exercise bike, ‘travelling’ about 20 km a day, so the 1,550km will take him approximately 10 weeks. Today, April 11, he reached Dingwall and will be in Inverness tomorrow.

He was also on the radio this morning, talking to Emily Jeffery of BBC Radio Surrey, and you can hear him at 3:45:45 here:

This is a peculiarly lockdown-style fundraising event. Paul says: “I started to use an exercise bike and thought this would be a good way of getting fit and raising money for charity, as we can’t actually get out and do much at the moment.

“I chose the two charities because I see Alzheimer’s as one of the biggest challenges for an aging population and finding a cure would immeasurably improve life for older people, and the St John’s Church tower has crumbling stonework which comes from being nearly 200 years old. It’s a lovely north Farnham landmark and we want to preserve it.”

concert raises money for Macmillan Cancer Support

Charity fundraising has been a victim of Covid, but there have been ways to keep bringing in money as a concert at St John’s before Christmas (and before Tier 4) proved.

The Gazebo Quartet, made up of local professional musicians, hired the church on December 13 and put on a concert for an invited audience who could sit safely in bubbles and appreciate the music.

Judy Dudley from the quartet writes: “

“The players who constitute the Gazebo String Quartet would like to give a big thank you to St John’s, Church Hale for making it possible for us to perform our Christmas Concert in December 2020.

“Being local musicians who play for both amateur and professional events, we formed the quartet when playing together outside under a gazebo during the early Covid restrictions, hence the name!

“We presented an eclectic programme of popular music items from Neil Diamond to Gilbert and Sullivan followed by beautiful arrangements of Christmas Carols from a variety of European roots.

“St John’s Church has a very fine acoustic for an event like this which made playing there particularly satisfying for string players. We were so pleased to be able to donate £175.00 to Macmillan Cancer Care donated by our generous invited audience.”

Cheap and easy cooking

Food poverty is on the rise in the UK. The UN estimates that millions of people struggle to get enough to eat, and Unicef is giving £700k to help support hungry British families. Foodbank use is on the rise both locally and nationally.

In response to this, our very good friends in the area, the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community UK, have launched a ‘Cheap & Easy Cooking’ campaign. As part of this, they have produced a downloadable booklet to help us cook five  Pakistani/Indian curries cheaply, easily, and healthily, with meals starting at only 9p per serving. The aim of the campaign is to raise awareness among people to save money by cooking budget-friendly dishes at home rather than eating costly meals from outside. The campaign consists of distributing a recipe booklet containing easy-to-follow instructions to make delicious Pakistani/Indian curries along with online videos that show how these can be cooked. These videos can be watched here. 

The community is also distributing some Curry Starter Packs to the local Food Bank, which will also include the basic ingredients so that people can easily and quickly get started.

Wrap up Farnham

Have you got an unwanted coat? It’s now easy to pass it on to someone in need, thanks to the ‘Wrap Up Farnham’ initiative just launched by Farnham Maltings.

The idea is to gather unwanted or unused coats and distribute them to those most in need.

There will be a drop-off point for donated coats at the Maltings from Wednesday, November 25 to Friday, November 27, 10am-4pm, after which volunteers will check the quality before placing them in quarantine.

Coats must:

  • be warm and good quality (no light summer jackets)  
  • be fully cleaned 
  • have all their buttons or a working zipper
  • be something that someone would want to wear  

The Maltings has linked up with a number of charities who will collect the coats and distribute them among those in need, including families, older people, those sheltering from domestic abuse and those who are homeless.

This month, as we deal with lockdown and all that this means, we remember and give thanks for those who served and sacrificed themselves in times of war. Our commemorations are mostly online this year but they are as important as ever.

We also look at ways of reducing our waste, hear from local MP Jeremy Hunt and welcome a new PCC. There’s Christmas shopping to do in our online art and craft fair, and the villages will be lit up by beacons on November 14, bringing hope and light.

Plus give to Project Wenceslas and help tackle fuel poverty and pop an extra pudding or two in your shopping order to give to the Foodbank. Oh, and get a cat…

Aly’s chop aims for the heart of the matter

Aly Buckle (pictured above), who goes to St Mark’s, has had the chop. Her lovely long hair is now a bob, and the hair that her husband Derek (also pictured) cut off with his garden shears and wallpaper scissors (or that was the threat!) has been donated to Little Princess Trust to make wigs for children who have lost their hair because of cancer.

But not only is she donating her hair, Aly is also raising money for the British Heart Foundation. Derek, as Aly explains, has been a heart patient for many years having had multiple heart heart attacks in his forties resulting in cardiac arrest. He was resuscitated and, as she says “is in his seventies and still beating! We are so blessed and grateful for all the treatment he has received.”
