Enjoy some Midsummer Magic at St George’s on the evening of Friday, June 24th, at 7.30pm, when Carillon Singers and the Parish Choir come together for an evening of light music, African songs, some well loved classics and new songs.
There will be refreshments in the church hall following the concert. Just come along and enjoy the evening – no need to book.

There were celebrations throughout the parish over the Jubilee weekend, as communities gathered together to mark 70 years of service by Queen Elizabeth II.
The long weekend started with a Jubilee tea party at St George’s on Thursday with entertainment by the Paris School of Dancing and the Parish Choir, along with memories from the past 70 years, poetry by Debbie Nobbs, and a huge Jubilee tea.
On Friday, Cajun Boogaloo and caller Kris Lawrence led around 50 of us in a barn dance at St Mark’s, and on Saturday, after a Family Fun Morning on Sandy Hill, with traditional games, including a tug of war, St Mark’s was filled with people tucking in to a free lunch provided by Hale Community Centre, with 80 per cent of the food coming from the Community Fridge. Once again there was music, with Roger Sanders on the saxophone and In Accord singing acapella; memorabilia; poetry and a message from the Queen (possibly), brought to us by Rosemary Wisbey; and a slide show with music of Hale in the past created by Elaine Fell. Then it was off to the Hale Rec for a Picnic in the Park with entertainment and teas and ice creams.
On Sunday, which was also the day of Pentecost, the Bishop of Dorking – the Rt Revd Jo Bailey Wells – led an outdoor Songs of Praise at St George’s, and then hurried on to St John’s for an indoor Service of Thanksgiving at St John’s, with the 2nd Farnham (Hale) Scouts, Air Cadets, members of Farnham Heath End School, local councillors and singer and healer Heather Golding. This was followed by a Big Jubilee Lunch with barbecue and a lot of cake, with more music from Roger Sanders and his saxophone quartet.
A huge thank-you to everyone who joined in for a celebration of the reign of a monarch who has served faithfully through good times and bad, and who has always emphasised how her Christian faith has been her constant guide.

We are now well under way with our work at St John’s. We record everything inside the church, but we also look at changes that have been made to the building to help us with dating items like windows and stonework. Our visits to the archives have revealed some interesting information about the changes made to St John’s since the church was built in 1844.
The first proposed alterations were featured in a previous blog post, and plans from 1844 and 1861 were then recorded in a later post.
However, according to a document at the Surrey History Centre, dated 1st July 1868, other improvements were made including the construction of a porch (whether south or west isn’t clear) which is not shown on the 1861 plan:
Then in 1895 a ‘Jubilee Memorial’ was proposed, and a draft version of an appeal leaflet found at London Metropolitan Archives during a research visit by one of our team explains why the changes were so badly needed!
The people elected to raise the funds for these improvements include names well known to those who are interested in the story of the church.
In the same bundle of documents is a plan dated 1896 showing what was eventually built.
It’s well known that Bishop Sumner and his wife Jennie were buried in St John’s churchyard, and we had heard various opinions about the exact position of their graves. The plan shows that they now lie under the vestry. The graves were originally outside the church, and the 1896 extension was built over them. The original gravestones are still in the churchyard but were moved to the east side of the church, and the beautiful memorial plaque to Bishop and Mrs Sumner in the chancel indicates that their graves are nearby. The plaque was designed by the Sumners’ grandson, Heywood Sumner, who was a noted artist in the Arts and Crafts movement.
We’re now looking into the next significant alteration and will reveal our findings in due course…
